October STEP – Focus on Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian collisions tend to increase during the fall
season, as the hours of daylight decrease and pedestrian visibility is reduced.
These collisions are also most likely to happen during the afternoon rush hour
(between 3:00 and 7:00 pm), when people are rushing to get home. We encourage drivers and pedestrians to always watch for each other.

Pedestrian safety facts:

  • Between 2013 and 2017, an average of 43 pedestrians were
    killed and 1,166 were injured each year.
  • In 2017, the highest number of pedestrian casualty
    collisions was in September.
