Chief Earl Leadership Legacy Fund Scholarships

On June 7, 2025, twenty-two local Grade 6 students received scholarships from the Chief Earl Leadership Legacy Fund.  The Fund was established in 2008 to celebrate Chief Earl’s contributions to the community and to honor his memory.

Each year, elementary schools identify students from within the local school districts who have demonstrated the qualities of future leaders based on the four core values of the Medicine Hat Police Service, with an additional focus on leadership and citizenship. Since its inception, and as of today, 275 students have been recognized.

The fund is administered through the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta with sponsorship from the Medicine Hat Safe Community Association and Medicine Hat Police Association. Parents of the scholarship recipients are encouraged to place the awards into an existing or newly opened Registered Educational Savings Plan.

Vehicle Stop Results In Charges

On June 5, 2025, at about 3:30 pm, after observing a driver of a vehicle drop an article of drug paraphernalia out of their vehicle, a member of the Medicine Hat Police Service Patrol Section, conducted a traffic stop in the 600 Block of Kingsway Avenue SE.

Upon identifying both the driver and the passenger of the vehicle, it was determined that they both had outstanding warrants for their arrest.  A subsequent search of the vehicle, resulted in the following items being located and seized;

  • 37 grams of fentanyl
  • 16 grams of methamphetamine
  • Drug packaging material used for resale
  • Individually packaged quantities of fentanyl believed to be for resale
  • A metal extendable baton
  • A can of bear spray
  • 3 functioning scales
  • Multiple drug pipes
  • Large quantity of Canadian currency

As a result of the seizure a 36-year-old male and a 36-year-old female, both from Edmonton have been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking (fentanyl), possession for the purpose of trafficking (methamphetamine), possession of a weapon dangerous, and possession of proceeds of crime.  In addition to this, the male was also charged with failing to comply with a release order.

Both individuals are currently in custody and being held for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing.

Two charged in large cocaine seizure

Two alleged drug dealers were arrested and over a kilogram of cocaine was seized following an ALERT investigation in Medicine Hat.

ALERT Medicine Hat’s organized crime team made the arrests and seizures on June 3, 2025 with help from Medicine Hat Police Service and Redcliff RCMP. The drugs seized have an estimated street value of $125,000.

Two Medicine Hat homes were searched after a planned traffic stop was conducted near Redcliff, Alta. Just over one kilogram of cocaine was located inside a vehicle and two people are accused of drug trafficking in the city.

“Our enforcement strategy was successful in stopping this large amount of drugs from circulation. This is a sizeable seizure for Medicine Hat and spared our community considerable harm,” said Staff Sergeant Ryan Thorburn, ALERT.

In total, ALERT seized 1,242 grams of cocaine and $9,180 cash.

Two people were charged and both remain in custody:

•             Konnor Smith-Boutlier, 24-year-old from Medicine Hat, is charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime;

•             Melissa Gertner, 46-year-old from Medicine Hat, is charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, and possession of a prohibited weapon;

Missing Youth Located

The youth that had been prevously reported as missing was safely located by the South East Alberta Search and Rescue (SEASAR). The Medicine Hat Police Service is grateful for the ongoing support and expertise of SEASAR.

Shooting Investigation

On May 31, 2025, members of the Medicine Hat Police Service responded to a report of a shooting at the Mayfair Manor apartments, located at 407 5 Avenue SE, Medicine Hat, Alberta. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim who had sustained multiple injuries. The incident took place in the parking lot of the apartment complex. The victim was transported to the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Medicine Hat Police Service Criminal Investigation Section attended the scene and has assumed responsibility for the ongoing investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that this was a targeted incident, and there is no known risk to public safety at this time. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Male Charged with Arson

On May 30, 2025, at approximately 10:00 p.m., members of the Medicine Hat Police Patrol Section and Medicine Hat Fire Services responded to a report of a garage fire at a residence located in the 700 block of 10 Street SE. Following an investigation, it was determined that the fire had been deliberately set, resulting in damages estimated at $5,000. No injuries were reported.

After further investigation, on June 1, 2025, a 48-year-old male resident of Medicine Hat was charged with the following offenses:

  • Shop breaking with Intent
  • Arson

The accused was detained for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing and subsequently remanded into custody to appear before the Medicine Hat Court of Justice.

Male Charged with B&E

On May 27, 2025, at approximately 8:26 PM members of the Medicine Hat Police Service Patrol Section were dispatched to a report of a break and enter in progress at a professional building located on 7 Street SE. Upon arrival officers searched the building and located a 34-year-old male hiding in a closet of a business located within the building. The accused was charged with two counts of shop breaking. The accused was held for a bail hearing and was remanded into custody to appear in Medicine Hat Court of Justice.

Dispute

On May 23, 2025, at approximately 10:36 PM, members of the Medicine Hat Police Service responded to a business on 13 Avenue SE after receiving a report of a dispute involving a firearm. It was reported that two individuals had a verbal argument, during which one of the individuals produced a firearm and threatened the other. The suspect left in a vehicle, which was subsequently located by police. A vehicle stop was conducted, and five occupants were arrested. A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a black Heckler air soft 9mm replica pistol. Following the investigation, no charges were filed, and the air soft was seized for safety reasons.

MHPS Open House

On Saturday, June 7, 2025, the Medicine Hat Police Service will be opening our doors to the community from 11 AM to 3:00 PM.  This event will provide an opportunity to learn more about the MHPS and its operations through information and displays, demonstrations and building tours.

In coordination with the Open House, the Medicine Hat Safe Community Association will be hosting a BBQ and 22 local Grade 6 students will be presented with awards from the Chief Gord Earl Leadership Legacy Fund.  The Fund was established in 2008 to celebrate Chief Earl’s contributions to the community and to honor his memory.  The fund is administered through the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta and each year recognizes Grade 6 students that have demonstrated the core values of the MHPS of integrity, respect, courage, and accountability, with an additional focus on leadership and citizenship.

Elementary schools identify students from within the local school districts who have demonstrated the qualities of future community leaders.  Since its inception in 2008, the Chief Earl Leadership Legacy Fund has rewarded 253 students with scholarships.

There is no charge to attend this event and no need to pre-register.

Robbery

On May 7, 2025, at 10:45 PM, four youths stole liquor from a store on Carry Dr SE. An employee confronted them, resulting in an altercation. The youths fled with the stolen liquor. The employee was not physically harmed during the altercation.

On May 14, 2025, police identified and arrested them for robbery. All four accused were held for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing were each of them were released on bail to appear in Medicine Hat Youth Court on May 26, 2025.  Under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the identities of all parties involved must remain confidential.
