Traffic Advisory - Over-Dimensional Load Escort

The MHPS Traffic Unit will be conducting an over-dimensional load escort this afternoon commencing at 1:30 PM. Injury MVC – Division Ave NW at 8th Street NW

On September 23, 2019 at approximately 8:15 AM a motor vehicle collision was reported on Division Avenue NW at the intersection of 8th Street NW, involving three vehicles travelling northbound on Division Avenue NW.

The collision occurred when a Ford truck slowed for traffic at a red light and was then hit from behind by a Kia Sorento and a Chevrolet Impala that followed. The female driver of the Sorento was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries, while none of the other drivers or occupants of the other vehicles reported physical injuries. Total damage to the involved vehicles is estimated at $8,000.

The MHPS Traffic Unit continues to investigate and charges are pending upon completion of the investigation.

Traffic Advisory - MVC at Division Ave / 8th St N

Update: Sept 23/19  9:30 AM

The MVC scene has been cleared and traffic flow has been restored.  Thank you for your cooperation. Further infomation about the MVC will be posted when available.

Police are currently responding to a three car MVC at intersection of 8th Street NW and Division Ave NW. Traffic flow has been reduced to one lane moving North and one lane moving South on Division Ave NW.  Please avoid the area if possible until further notice.  More details will be released when available. Update on Sept 19 Incident at Courthouse

The Medicine Hat Police Service continues to investigate an incident that took place at the courthouse September 19, 2019, which resulted in a precautionary evacuation of the premises.

The investigation has not revealed any suspicious activity, packages or substances. One person was taken to hospital as a precaution, however it appears that symptoms were likely due to an unrelated medical issue. One exhibit was collected at scene and preliminary examinations indicate nothing out of the ordinary. The MHPS expects to conclude the investigation shortly.

Public Advisory - Suspicious Package

Emergency Crews are on scene at the Medicine Hat Provincial Court House in response to a suspicious package.  Staff members and civilians are being evacuated as a precautionary measure. The Medicine Hat Fire Service Haz-Mat Team, Major Crimes, and Patrol members are currently on scene.   

Police are requesting that the public avoid the area of 460 1 St SE., Medicine Hat, Alberta.

The police service is not in a position to provide more details at this time, as the investigation is in the beginning stages.

Arrest of Justin Castor

On September 18th, 2019 members of the Medicine Hat Police Service located 20-year-old Justin Castor and a 26-year old female in a vehicle reported stolen from Leader, SK.

Castor was the subject of a previous MHPS release requesting public assistance to locate in relation to several recent offences including; flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, possess stolen credit card and breach of probation

As officers attempted to arrest Castor, he tried to flee the scene but was unsuccessful. Both Castor and the female are held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Investigation into report of suspicious vehicle

On September 17, 2019 at approximately 4:17 PM the Medicine Hat Police Service received a report of a suspicious vehicle observed near the playground at St Louis School.

The investigation has determined that the reported vehicle was associated with a community group who had attended the area near the school to pick up a youth participant of their programming. The same vehicle also picked up another youth in the Southridge area a short time after. It has also been confirmed that no photos of youth were taken, however the driver did use her cellphone while attempting to contact the participant’s homes.

The MHPS would like to thank both the member of the public who reported their concern, and also the driver of the vehicle in question, who reached out to the MHPS after learning of the concerns circulating on social media.

The MHPS encourages members of the public to report all suspicious activity in their neighborhood by calling 9-1-1 in an emergency or 403-529-8481 for non-emergencies. Information may also be submitted via the MHPS Mobile App, which is free and available to download for both Apple and Android devices by searching ‘Medicine Hat Police Service’ on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
