Male Charged in Connection to Stolen Vehicle

On October 9, 2018, at approximately 7:45 am members of the Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) attended to the 200 block of 12 Street NE for a report of a stolen vehicle.  The vehicle had been left unlocked, running and unattended at time it was stolen.

MHPS Patrol members quickly attended the area and located the vehicle driving eastbound on 12 Street NE towards Parkview Drive.  The suspect ignored all traffic control at the intersection and proceeded to drive on to the grassy area at a golf course.  After driving the vehicle a short distance, the suspect then fled on foot.  Following a short foot pursuit, a 26-year-old male was arrested without incident.

The male is currently held in custody awaiting a bail hearing and facing the following charges;
  • -  Theft Over $5000
  • -  Mischief Damage Under $5000
  • -  Breach of Recognizance

  • The name of the male cannot be released at this time.

Alberta leads the country in vehicle thefts, accounting for 29% of all thefts in Canada, according to Statistic Canada’s Uniform Crime Reporting data.  Many times auto thefts are crimes of opportunity and the MHPS would like to remind drivers that there are simple steps that can be taken to prevent it – remove keys, hide /remove all valuables and lock it up.
